The Sadness of the Story of a Couple

Unexpected events have happened to a husband and wife from New Zealand. The reason is that the couple was dragged into cases of theft, dishonest use of documents, and money laundering. The couple was named Hui Gao or Leo and Kara Hurring.

Wrong Bank Transfer Excess Some Zero

Launching from The Sun, the couple’s story began when Gao applied for a loan to Westpac Bank with a nominal value of NZD 100,000.

The money was supposed to be used to help his gas station business being built in Rotorua, New Zealand, in 2009.

Not long after applying for the loan, the bank immediately agreed to it. But unlucky, the bank actually made a mistake in transferring the money.

The bank even added a few zeros during the transfer. No doubt this made Gao an impromptu tycoon.

Getting a fantastic amount of money that was outside the agreement, Gao and his wife admitted that they were worried. They realize that the money is not their right. However, because they were tempted, they were desperate to use the money for extravagance.

Using Money for Spending

The couple used the wrong money transfer to escape from their residence. Not only that, the two of them used the money to gamble and stay at the hotel.

One of Gao’s friends, Bianca Taute, explained that her friend confirmed the amount of money that went into her account several times.

“Gao was overjoyed. He jumped on the bed, shouting ‘we are rich’,” said Taute as quoted on Friday (23/9/2022).

Launching from The Sun, when running away the couple brought one of their children, named Leena. At first, Gao and Kara fled to Auckland. While there, the couple moved money worth NZD 6.78 million.

The husband and wife then went to China, to be precise in Macau. There Gao and his family spent money on gambling.

Not staying silent, the bank realized his mistake and reported it to the authorities. After that the authorities issued a notice to conduct an international hunt.

Before being arrested, this couple had spent a nominal amount of NZD 6.78 million.

The story was made into a film

The story of the couple was brought up in a film called Runaway Millionaires. As a result of the hunt, Gao and Kara became the spotlight of the entire world population.

Finally, after months, Kara finally turned herself in to the police. Kara returned to New Zealand in 2011.

Unfortunately, the authorities have not been able to arrest Gao. The reason, the man is still living in China, which does not have an extradition treaty with New Zealand.

Until finally Gao made the mistake of going to Hong Kong. He was finally caught.

At that time, Gao was sentenced to 16 months in prison. He was released in 2013. Gao was found guilty of 25 counts of theft, 3 counts of dishonest use of documents, and 2 counts of money laundering.

While Kara was sentenced to 9 months in prison and had to pay some money to the bank.

“Your Majesty, some say that the greatest temptation was faced by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. But these are modern times for a man trying to keep the doors of his small business open. The millions placed in his bank account is a very big temptation,” Gao’s lawyer defended in court. (AUTHOR/DITA ALVIANASARI)
