Mnet Confirms Airing of Survival Show “Boys Planet” in 2023

Adapting from Soompi on Saturday (25/6), Mnet officially confirmed its plans to air the survival show “Boys Planet”—the male version of the 2021 audition show that spawned the girl group Kep1er—in the first half of 2023.

Mnet has also announced that they will be opening global auditions for the show “Boys Planet” from June 27 to August 21. Any male potential entrant born before January 1, 2009 is eligible to apply, regardless of nationality, agency affiliation, or past experience. More information will be available on the official website starting June 27 at 1 p.m. KST.

This is in contrast to the previous survival show, “Girls Planet 999” which was specifically limited to contestants who were Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

In addition, in the requirements and qualifications, it is stated that the male candidate has independent status or is not bound by a contract with any agency. This makes netizens speculate that the “Boys Planet” group has the potential to become a permanent group because they are not under contract with any agency. In contrast to several previous Mnet survival shows, such as the “Produce 101” series and “Girls Planet 999” which were dominated by trainees from various agencies.

Although “Boys Planet” started receiving applications from potential contestants late last year, the show’s production team decided to extend the application period after setting a premiere date of 2023.

Previously, Mnet had announced their latest survival show, “Boys Planet” through a teaser video at the 2021 Mnet Asia Music Awards (MAMA) which was held on December 11, 2021. In the teaser video, there was a sentence that reads “A signal from a new planet” which means “A signal from a new planet detected.”

Mnet itself is a private television station from South Korea. This television station is known to often produce survival programs, such as “Produce 101” (Season 1 and 2), “Produce 48,” “Girls Planet 999,” “Queendom” (Season 1 and 2), “Kingdom,” ” Street Woman Fighter,” and more.
