Football is one of the most popular sports in the world, Indonesia is no exception. Football in Indonesia is not just a sport, but is transformed into people’s entertainment, a tool for the people’s struggle against colonialism, regional identity, maybe even penetrated into the world of politics.
When talking about football in Indonesia, there are actually many things that can be discussed, various backgrounds can be combined with soccer in Indonesia.
It’s been since the colonial era
Football in Indonesia has been going on for a long time, even since the colonial era, football has started running in Indonesia. The Indonesian Football Association or abbreviated as PSSI was founded in 1930. At that time colonialism by the Dutch was still happening. If one examines the football league in Indonesia, which started around 1930, football can also be interpreted as a means of people’s struggle against colonialism.
Until 1979 the national football competition was held amateurishly, this competition was better known as the union, teams such as Persebaya Surabaya, Persib Bandung, PSIM Yogyakarta, Persis Solo, Persija Jakarta, to PPSM Magelang were teams that came from the union era.
In addition to the union, the Indonesian football competition also had Galatama, in 1979-1980 the Main Football League competition was introduced called Galatama. Even so, Indonesian football competitions, namely the union and Galatama, continue to run separately. The union football competition and Galatama only merged in 1994.
It is undeniable that the enthusiasm or fanaticism of football fans in Indonesia is very high, mixed with a sense of pride and regional pride that makes the enthusiasm of football lovers in Indonesia, especially the local team supporters, extraordinary. Not only local teams, there are also many football fans or connoisseurs who have favorite teams or clubs from abroad or outside Indonesia, for example Liverpool fans, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and many more.
This makes a great asset in terms of the football market, quite extraordinary.
Achievements and conditions
Indonesian football in terms of achievements can be said to be ups and downs and needs to be improved, on the international stage Indonesia was the first Asian team to qualify for the World Cup in 1938, at that time Indonesia still used the name of the Dutch East Indies National Football Team, Indonesia had also won a bronze medal in Men’s football at the Asian Games in 1958, Indonesia’s participation in the Asian Cup has also occurred in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2007.
In addition to the ups and downs of achievements, the condition of Indonesian football must also be improved, especially in nurturing young players, increasing awareness of athletes’ nutrition, as well as infrastructure that needs more attention, even though in terms of Indonesian football infrastructure, it has started to experience a good improvement.
Indonesian football also needs to improve conditions in terms of football games, especially match equipment such as referees and the sportsmanship and professionalism of all elements that manage Indonesian football. With this, it is hoped that the condition of football in Indonesia will be better.
There are many hopes for Indonesian football to be better, the hopes of many football lovers, football lovers, or even all Indonesian people.
Hopefully that hope will come true soon, an example of that hope is that the Indonesian national team will soon be able to win the AFF Cup, participate in the Asian Cup, and the World Cup.
