Justin Bieber announced he was suffering from Ramsay Hunt syndrome through his personal Instagram upload on Friday (10/6/2022). This condition left his face paralyzed on one side. The singer was forced to postpone his concerts in Toronto and Washington DC
“So, there was complete paralysis on the side of my face. For those frustrated with the cancellation of my next concert, I physically, obviously, couldn’t do it. It’s quite serious, as you can see.” said the 28-year-old singer on Sunday (12/06/2022) through a post on his Instagram account while moving his face even though half of them really couldn’t react.
What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome? The following explanation is adapted from Healthline and various other sources.
What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?
Ramsay Hunt syndrome, also known as herpes zoster oticus, affects the facial nerve near one ear and hearing loss in the affected ear.
This syndrome is caused by reactivation of a virus that can cause 12% of facial paralysis. This condition is similar to Bell’s Palsy (paralysis of one side of the facial muscles so that the face looks droopy), but Ramsay Hunt syndrome is worse than that.
Causes of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
The virus that causes this syndrome is the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles, namely Varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Usually chickenpox is suffered by children, while smallpox is suffered by adults. The chickenpox virus can still live on nerves. This virus does not rule out being able to reactivate and be able to affect the facial nerve.
Symptoms of Ramsay Hunt
Symptoms of this syndrome vary, usually starting with the appearance of a small, painful red rash, and weakness on the affected side of the face and leading to loss of facial expression.
There are also worse symptoms such as eardrum pain that causes hearing loss, ringing in the ears, difficulty closing one eye, paralysis on one side of the face, vertigo, to loss of taste, and dry mouth and eyes.
Anyone Potentially Has Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
Ramsay Hunt syndrome originates from the chickenpox virus which usually affects children, so the risk can occur to anyone for anyone who has had chickenpox.
This syndrome usually occurs in adults, people older than 60 years, and rarely occurs in children.
Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Remedies and Treatments
Suffering from this syndrome can be cured with drugs such as Acyclovir, Famciclovir, and Valacyclovir. Meanwhile, the recovery rate is quite high, which is above 70%. Of course, the right medical approach is needed
However, this syndrome is not contagious. But for anyone who has never had chickenpox or the smallpox vaccine, be aware that it can cause chickenpox. Infection can be serious if it affects people with weak immune systems, newborns, and pregnant women.
I wish Justin Bieber a speedy recovery and he can continue his world tour again!
