There are so many benefits that we can get from keeping pets at home. People choose to keep and adopt animals in their homes for a variety of reasons, from pity to wanting to make friends in lonely times.
Although there are several diseases that can be caused or transmitted by several animals, there are not a few studies that prove that pets also have benefits for the health of their owners.
Quoting from WebMD and HealthLine listed in the book compiled by the Tempo Data and Analysis Center Team, here are four health benefits that you can get from pets.
1. Lower cholesterol
What is the relationship between raising animals and cholesterol levels? A study shows that people who have pets tend to have better cholesterol and triglyceride levels than people who don’t have pets. This is due to a more active lifestyle with pets.
2. Blood pressure gets better
Keeping animals at home can also help us manage blood pressure. In a study of 240 married couples, having a pet at home helped maintain better blood pressure and heart rate during rest compared to couples who didn’t have pets.
3. Healthy heart
A 20-year study showed that people who had never had a cat at all were 40% more likely to die of a heart attack than those who had or are currently owning a cat.
Other studies have also shown that dog owners have better survival rates within one year after a heart attack.
4. Increase the chances of longevity
Recent studies and separate meta-analyses published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, stated that the risk of death from a heart attack in dog owners was 33% lower. Dogs can also make the owner live a healthier and longer life. Owning a dog is beneficial for people with heart attacks and ischemic strokes, when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted due to blockages.
Those are the four benefits of having pets for our health. There are many other benefits that are being studied by researchers. So, now you are interested in starting a pet?
